On December 14, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave the go-ahead to Del Monte Fresh Produce’s patented genetically engineered pink pineapples and concluded they are safe to produce.
Del Monte has quietly been working on the fruit’s development since 2005. The pineapple, known as “Rosé,” passed the FDA’s evaluation with “no unresolved safety or regulatory questions,” according to the FDA website.
Although the pink pineapple will be marketed and sold in the United States, they are not planning on growing it here. The pineapple will actually be grown in Costa Rica.
What Makes The Pineapple Pink?
The pink pineapple simply has some genes toned down to keep the flesh of the fruit pinker and sweeter, the FDA said. It has been genetically engineered to produce lower levels the enzymes already in conventional pineapples that convert the pink pigment lycopene to the yellow pigment beta carotene.
According to the FDA, Del Monte will label the new fruit “extra sweet pink flesh pineapple” so that people expecting yellow fruit won’t get confused by the new variety.
Why Is The Pink Pineapple So Unsafe?
Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. In more than 60 countries around the world GMOs are are restricted, labeled or banned. In the US, the governed approved GMOs for use in food based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created GMOs and profit from their sale.
Unfortunately most of the studies on genetically engineered crops have been performed on animals. Mice, rabbits, and rats that were fed genetically modified crops have showed disturbed liver and pancreas function, have had disturbances in the kidneys and heart, have showed changes in uterus and ovaries, showed significant disturbance in immune cells and biochemical activity, and found consistent toxic effects on the liver and kidneys.
Stay away from Del Monte’s new genetically modified pink pineapple when it hits your supermarket’s shelves, and stick with the organic yellow pineapple that is good for your body.
Note: The picture at the top of this post is NOT the pineapple that will sold in stores. The pink pineapple is going to look like the normal yellow pineapple on the outside and will be pink on the inside. The picture is one that I found on the Internet.
